Associations play a vital role in shaping the next generation of professionals. As many industries experience workforce shortages and retirements, engaging students early has become an essential strategy for long-term sustainability.
At Easter Associates, we work with associations to create meaningful programs that connect students to the industries they are considering while building a pipeline of future talent. Our approach combines direct outreach, intentional communication and real-world experience that prepares students for long-term success and gives associations access to a motivated future workforce.
Connecting Students to Your Industry
One of the ways we help associations reach students is by staffing university career fairs and actively promoting internships, mentorships and industry-specific opportunities. We also leverage associations’ social media channels to educate students, highlight interns’ experiences and showcase post-grad success stories. Regular follow-ups, surveys and communications keep students engaged and informed over time, strengthening the bridge between their education and their careers. Our team manages outreach, as well as follow-up and placement logistics, which reduces the administrative burden for association members.
Creating Leadership Opportunities for Students
With many industries facing workforce declines, associations are seeking creative ways to attract, train and retain young talent. We work closely with each association’s board of directors to design programs tailored to their specific goals, budget and recruitment needs. These programs provide structured experiences, from mentorships to hands-on industry exposure, helping students build leadership skills while contributing to the association and its work.
These types of programs are never one-size-fits-all. We develop strategies based on industry needs, association budgets and board priorities. Some internships are paid, while others may offer academic credit or experience-based opportunities. Programs can be customized to target specific career paths in industries experiencing workforce shortages, ensuring associations cultivate a pipeline of qualified, motivated candidates.
Successful Student Engagement in Action
One standout initiative we’ve worked on is the Virginia Association of Broadcasters’ (VAB) Annual Summer Internship Program. Staff work alongside VAB members to register for and staff university career fairs, as well as promote internships and job opportunities in the broadcast industry. During these career fairs, students have the chance to explore “a day in the life” of radio and television professionals, try out industry equipment and connect with internship coordinators. Following the event, applications are reviewed, students are matched with appropriate stations and eight-week internships are arranged to ensure a mutually beneficial placement for both students and stations.
Beyond internships, VAB also hosts the Best of the Best Leadership Program, a four-session series, designed for emerging professionals, covering leadership styles, advocacy, team management and industry case studies. Over the past 13 years, the program has produced more than 160 graduates, including seven of whom were promoted to general managers at their respective stations and four who currently serve on the VAB Board.
Let’s Work Together
By engaging students and young professionals with intention, associations support the next generation and reinforce the long-term health of their industries. We partner with associations to design programs that educate, inspire and build lasting connections between students and industry professionals.
